The littoral sand hills of barrier islands, between Quinta do Lago and Cacela, limit the Ria Formosa from the ocean. In this typical coast line we have six inlets that supply the water renewal to the lagoon: Barra de S. Luis, Faro-Olhão, Armona, Fuseta, Tavira e Cacela. These inlets define on their limits the Ancão and Cacela peninsulas, and in their body the Barreta Island, Culatra Island, Armona, Tavira and Cabanas Islands.

Occupying a total area of approximately 18000ha, it has a huge diversity of habitats like marshes, salt marshes, islands, channels and others. The Ria Formosa Natural Park was created 1987 to preserve and ensure the protection and promotion of its natural assets and also to manage the area in a more sustainable way. 

The south coast of Portugal is a region strongly dependent on fisheries, which lead to the development of several arts and ways to explore marine resources. Although tourism is one of the most important activities in the region, fisheries are still quite important. Like in other areas, this industry has been suffering from the depletion of fisheries resources. Due to its geological characteristics, the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon generates a great source of resources so activities like fisheries and shellfish farming are essential.

The Ria Formosa is also important as a nursery area. Many species use the channels of this coastal lagoon as spawning grounds and during their first development stages, and then go to the Atlantic waters, in a cyclic way. The contribution for the recruitments of new individuals allied to its favorable geographical position, with calm and warmer waters, is crucial in the Portuguese coast.

Not less important are the birds. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is considered one of the most important wetlands for numerous species of aquatic birds that use as feeding habitat, a breeding area and others as a wintering ground. The surrounding salt-pans “Salinas” play also an important role as a feeding habitat during high-tide, when birds can’t use the marsh. During generations man, observed and learned how take benefits out of this important coastal lagoon.

O cordão litoral de ilhas barreira, entre a Quinta do Lago e Cacela, delimita exteriormente a Ria Formosa. Nesse cordão litoral, abrem-se Barras que alimentam a laguna, designadas por barra do Ancão, Faro- Olhão, Armona, Fuzeta, Tavira e Cacela. Estas definem nos extremos do cordão as penínsulas de Faro e Cacela, e no seu corpo as ilhas da Barreta, Culatra, Armona, Tavira e Cabanas. Ocupando cerca de 18.000ha mostra uma diversidade de ambientes, entre eles sapais, bancos, ilhas e canais. O Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, criado em 1987, surge da necessidade de assegurar a protecção e promoção dos valores naturais, corrigir processos que possam conduzir à degradação dos mesmos e definir modelos e regras de ocupação e utilização da área.

A Costa Sul de Portugal é uma região que depende fortemente da actividade piscatória, dando origem a um vasto conjunto de artes de pesca e formas de explorar os recursos marinhos. Apesar do carisma turístico da região, esta actividade pesqueira origina uma grande empregabilidade junto da população. Devido às suas características intrínsecas, o sistema de ilhas barreira da Ria Formosa constitui um recurso de grande variedade, que vai desde as pescas, à produção de bivalves, actividades portuárias, turismo, entre outros. É também relevante a sua função como maternidade. Muitas são as espécies que utilizam a Ria Formosa como lugar de desova e desenvolvimento inicial, para posteriormente repovoarem as águas do Atlântico num fantástico comportamento cíclico. O seu contributo no recrutamento dos mananciais pesqueiros aliado à sua posição geográfica – que proporciona águas abrigadas e mais dias de pesca no ano – é muito importante para os os recursos pesqueiros da costa Portuguesa.

Não menos importantes são as aves. A área do Parque Natural é considerada um excelente habitat para inúmeras espécies de aves aquáticas e limícolas, como local de alimentação, reprodução e refúgio. As salinas situadas nas áreas adjacentes à laguna, actuam como locais alternativos de alimentação, sendo essenciais durante a maré-alta, momento em que as aves não conseguem utilizar a zona de sapal. Ao longo de gerações soube-se observar, interpretar o meio envolvente e dele retirar os seus frutos. De tal astúcia, resultou uma grande riqueza cultural, económica, de recursos e também de actividades.

Decerto que já ouviu falar das cinco ilhas barreira, do Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, que se estendem ao longo de cerca de 60 km de costa. Mas será que conhece a sua verdadeira essência? Sabia que as dunas servem de local de nidificação à andorinha-do-mar-anã, a única colónia que se reproduz em Portugal? E que na Ilha da Culatra existe uma comunidade piscatória com características únicas?

Era conhecida no passado como Ilha dos Cães e possuía uma geografia bastante distinta daquela que conhecemos hoje. Foi no passado um local de erradicação de possíveis pestes, já foi um abrigo de pescadores e já teve palhotas de estorno.

Presentemente a Ilha da Culatra possui a única comunidade residente no sistema lagunar, praias desertas banhadas por águas cristalinas, um areal extenso protegido por um cordão dunar rico em cheiros e cores, e é povoada por pilritos frenéticos na sua incansável procura por alimento. Reserve um passeio de barco nos canais da Ria Formosa e pare nesta ilha. Passeie pelo casario baixo e colorido, pelo seu encanto natural, saboreie a gastronomia local e termine um dia fantástico com o regresso ao fim da tarde, hora privilegiada para assistir a um  caloroso pôr-do-sol.

Surely you already heard about the five barrier islands of the Natural Park of Ria Formosa which extend over 60 km of coastline. But do you know its true essence? Did you know that the dunes serve as breeding grounds for Little Tern, the only colony that breeds in Portugal?

And that Culatra Island is a fishing community with unique characteristics? It was known in the past as Isle of the Dogs and had a very distinct geography that we know today. It was once a place of possible eradication of pests, has been a shelter for fishermen and houses made of timber and Marram grass.

At the present Culatra Island has the only resident community in the lagoon system, deserted beaches with crystal clear waters, a long coast line made by sand dunes rich in scents and colours, sandpipers frantic in their relentless search for food. Book a boat tour in the channels of the Ria Formosa and stop on this island. Walk down the colourful houses, along its natural beauty, enjoy the local cuisine and finish the day with a fantastic return in the evening, prime hour for a warm sunset.

Introduction

Ria Formosa Natural Park is located in Algarve and includes the southernmost point of continental Portugal - Santa Maria Cape. The pelagic boat trip started from Olhão, we navigated along the main channels of Ria Formosa Natural Park in direction of the ocean.  Main goal: look for marine birds and dolphins!

The trip

After a brief introduction about the bird watching boat trip and security procedures we started our fantastic morning. Inside the lagoon, the tide revealed some muddy areas but not yet their usual waders, so we crossed the area straight to the ocean. Once on sea, we didn’t have to go far to find a large flock of Northern Gannets diving down for fish, surrounded by a few traditional fishing boats. Perfect moment for photos!

Some minutes later we started to look for petrels and shearwaters. As the boat navigated, they started to glide in front of us. It was amazing to see the Wilson’s Storm Petrels “walking” on the water and the way they catch small food particles at the surface. We had also very good views of Cory’s shearwaters gliding on the surface and the nostrils details.

The wind started to blow a little bit stronger and we decided to turn direction. It was a good decision (not only because it became warmer) but also because we had the chance to find a small group of common dolphins (4-6 individuals on the surface). They easily approached the boat but yet not for too long. Anyway, it is good to know that they stay on these waters during the winter time.

The birdwacthing and marine life boat trip continued with several sightings of Northern gannets, Cory’s shearwaters and Great skuas. Once inside the lagoon the tide already revealed more marsh areas and we still had the chance to look for some waders: oystercatchers, godwits, wimbrel, dunlin, grey plovers, egrets and storks.

We just wanted to thank you once again for a fantastic trip around the barrier islands last week. We would certainly recommend this to anyone. The weather could have been better but you compensated by making the trip very interesting - and of course the excellent lunch with great company helped also.
